Carl Edwards Series Leading 9th Win at Homestead
Jimmie Johnson Wins Third Sprint Championship
Chad Knaus Wins Third Championship as Crew Chief
What a history-making end to the 2008 Sprint Cup Series
with Jimmie Johnson winning a third Championship in a
row. This has only been done by one other driver and
that's Cale Yarborough in 1976, '77, and '78.
Jimmie Johnson started 30th and made his way up through
the crowd to lead 6 laps and finished 15th well within the
window where he needed to be for the championship.
Chad Knaus also made history as the first Crew Chief
to win 3 Championships in a row.
And not to leave out Carl Edwards who had a great
year and won a series best 9 races in 2008.
Carl led 157 laps taking the lead the last time
on lap 264 when he overtook Matt Kenseth who ran out
of gas. Matt had led 73 laps and finished 25th. This
dropped him to 11th in the points so he won't be going
to New York for the Chase Banquet.
Carl Edwards was 14 seconds ahead of 2nd place finisher
Kevin Harvick and cut back on the throttle to save gas as
he ran out just crossing the start-finish line.
3rd place finisher was Jamie McMurray and 4th was
Jeff Gordon who started 37th but raced up to first to
lead 16 laps. 5th place was Clint Bowyer, last night's
Nationwide Series Winner. 6th was Kasey Kahne, 7th
was Travis Kvapil, and 8th Casey Mears. Tony Stewart in
his last race for Joe Gibbs Racing ran up front leading
11 laps and finishing 9th. Martin Truex, Jr. finished 10th.
Dale Earnhardt, Jr. stalled leaving the pit after a
2 tire stop when he thought they were going to do 4. Then
on lap 245 he said "can't drive it" and it was a broken
caliper with 16 laps to go dropping Junior to last in
the points. But he was happy with his move to Hendrick's
Motor Sports and is looking forward to 2009.
And don't forget, Hendrick's Motor Sports, Rick Hendrick
has 8 Championship Wins as an owner.

Johnson pulled away for the win.

mathematically within range but everyone else is

finished 6th, Kevin Harvick finished 7th, Kyle

the #84 car. David Gilliand and Scott Speed were
both able to exit the cars and were ok.

Carl Edwards Wins at Texas for Second Win in a Row
Closing the gap on Jimmie Johnson, Carl Edwards was
saving gas at the end to stay out front and not
pit. His gamble paid off for his 8th win of the
season and closing the gap on Jimmie Johnson's lead.
Jimmie Johnson had a bad day with a bad handling
car he could not get under control and finished 15th
from as much as 2 laps down.
Carl closed the gap from 183 points behind Jimmie
Johnson to 106.
Dale Earnhardt, Jr. was in 2nd on lap 326 when he
and 3rd place Jeff Gordon decided not to pit for gas
and try to go the whole way. On lap 328 Dale Jr.
was out of gas headed to pit road. After a splash of
gas the car would not fire and he had to be pushed
back from the line and forward again to get it going.
Dale Jr. finished 20th.
Carl Edwards had lead the most laps then lost the
after a pit for 4 tires, then made his way back to the
by not pitting for gas again. He lead a total of 212 laps.
Jeff Gordon lead 15 laps earlier after starting from
the pole and finished 2nd.
Jamie McMurray had a very good day leading 56 laps
and then finishing 3rd. Clint Bowyer lead 36 laps and
finished 4th. Greg Biffle lead 2 laps and finished 5th.
Kyle Busch led 2 laps and finished 6th coming up
2 positions in the points to 10th position.
Kevin Harvick finished 7th, Martin Truex, Jr.
finished 8th and Matt Kenseth finished 9th. David
Reutimann lead 5 laps and finished 10th.
David Gilliland was held by Nascar for 5 laps in
the penalty box after intentionally bumping the rear
of Juan Pablo Montoya and causing a crash into the
wall. Although Juan was ok his car was not and it
was another DNF for the team. Montoya was running
well in 10th when this payback occured.

Jeff Burton Wins at Lowe's Motor Speedway
Jeff Burton jumps from 4th to 2nd in the points
with his win of the Bank of America 500.
Jeff Burton was out in front of Kasey Kahne,
who finished 2nd, when he crossed the finish line.
Kurt Busch finished 3rd, Kyle finished 4th and
Jamie McMurray finished 5th.
Jimmie Johnson who had started on the pole
due to rained out qualifying faded to finish
in 6th position. Greg Biffle finished 7th.
Jeff Gordon finished in 8th position after
starting the race and hitting the wall twice
within 6 laps. He started back in 43rd place
and drove to 1st by lap 204. After a green pit
stop out of sequence he did not regain 1st again.
Mark Martin finished 9th and David Ragan 10th.
Dale Earnhardt, Jr. was running in 6th on lap

wall hard causing a lot of damage. He came back
on the track 45 laps down. Examining the tire
showed there was a cut causing the blow out.
Carl Edwards slipped from 2nd to 4th in the
points after going a lap down after loose lug nuts
caused him to come back down pit road and then on a
later restart he lost power and couldn't fire the
engine. He was pushed off the track and the crew
frantically searched for the cause of the power
failure. They changed out the ignition box and
got the race car started and he came out again

Tony Stewart's First Win at Talladega
Tony Stewart had a double today; his first win at
Talladega and his first win in 2008!
DEI cars were following 2, 3, and 4. Reagan
Smith was right on Tony's bumper and went down
below the yellow line to pass for first place and
he thought he had won. But NASCAR declared Tony
the winner as it is an illegal move to go below
the yellow line and advance your position.
There were a lot of wrecks in the 188 lap race.
First, in practice Friday, Dale Earnhardt, Jr. blew
a rear tire which blew off the rear panel and he
took out a lot of other vehicles too. He and a lot
of them went to back up vehicles but Tony Stewart's
crew spent all night fixing up the #20.
Dale Earnhardt, Jr. started the racefrom the back
of the pack and was up to first place by lap 26.
There was a big crash on lap 69 when Brian Vickers
in the Red Bull 83 blew a right front tire and turned
into Martin Truex, Jr. in second place taking him out
and others. There was a red flag stop.
On lap 98 Denny Hamlin's tire exploded and he hit
the wall hard, taken on a stretcher to the local
hospital to be checked out. He was awake and alert.
The Big One 2, was a crash with 15 laps to go.
Greg Biffle, Carl Edwards and Matt Kenseth were at
the front when Carl Edwards bumped Greg Biffle a little
to hard in the wrong place and he got loose taking out
all three, Dale Earnhardt, Jr. who was just behind
them and had nowhere to go. A lot of cars were out
after this crash. It was also the second red flag stop.
Tony Stewart was leading on the restart with 11
laps to go with cars single file racing and a lot of
bumper to bumper. Jamie McMurray had a rear tire go
down and there was another caution with all the debris
on the track.
Tony Stewart was still leading on the restart with
3 laps to go and the 3 DEI cars were right behind him.
On the final lap Regan Smithh passed from 2nd below
the yellow line to get to 1st. Since he advanced his
position, this was an illegal move and Tony Stewart
was declared the winner.
Tony Stewart led 23 laps and won the race. Regan
Smith was 2nd. Paul Menard led 6 laps and was 3rd.
David Ragan led 11 laps and was 4th. Jeff Burton led
8 laps and was 5th.
Clint Bowyer finished 6th, Bobby Labonte finished
7th, Scott Riggs led 4 laps and finished 8th, Robby
Gordon finished 9th. Jimmie Johnson who was a lap down
at one point, led 3 laps, and finished 10th.
Travis Kvapil was the pole sitter, led 17 laps and
was taken out in the Big One 2 finishing 27th. Dale
Earnhardt, Jr. finished out in 28th after leading 18 laps.
Carl Edwards was 29th, Brian Vickers was 35th after leading
10 laps. Jeff Gordon was out in 38th after having led
3 laps after a crash and when repairs failed on lap 138.
Denny Hamlin had led 9 laps but finished 39th after his
crash.

Jimmie Johnson Wins at Kansas City, 5th Win in 2008
Jimmie Johnson took the lead by coming out first
from the pits and was pulling away from Carl Edwards.
Then Jimmie came upon lap traffic and Carl got
close. In the last half lap of the race he came
from behind and went around Johnson, slidding up and
hit the wall! The wall slowed him down and Johnson
took the lead again. Carl was able to hold on and
come back down the race track but could not pass
Johnson before the finish. It was exciting racing.
Jimmie Johnson won from the pole and led a total
of 124 laps. Carl Edwards finished 2nd and led a
total of 31 laps.
Greg Biffle overtook Jeff Gordon for 3rd. Jeff Gordon,
who was sick all weekend, didn't let that stop him from
finishing 4th.
Matt Kenseth led 49 laps at the beginning then ran
into problems with a loose lug nut on pit road and
a spin out from a small bump by Casey Mears. He was
able to race back to the front and finished 5th.
Kevin Harvick finished 6th, Jeff Burton finished 7th,
David Ragan finished 8th, and AJ Allmendinger finished
9th, his best finish in a Sprint Cup race. Elliott
Sadler finished 10th, Denny Hamlin finished 11th with
5 points for leading a lap, and Clint Bowyer finished
12th after coming from the back from a passing on the
start penalty.
Dale Earnhardt, Jr. finished 13th after fighting
an ill handling car all afternoon. And Casey Mears
finished 14th after leading 29 laps.
Unbelieveably, Kyle Busch had a 3rd bad week with
a sputtering, rough running car with little power. He
finished 28th, 2 laps down but did lead 1 lap.
Tony Stewart had a pit incident with another team
crew member on his hood that delayed his exiting the
pits. But he also made contact with #83 and spun down
through the grass a long way which broke a front splitter.
He finished 40th, 7 laps down. He fell 4 spots in the
points standings.

In a 300 lap race on the mile track at New Hampshire,
Greg Biffle started 9th and on lap 289 passed Jimmie
Johnson to stay ahead until he won. He led 58 laps in all.
Jimmie Johnson wasn't far back and felt with a few
more laps he could have overtaken Biffle again. But
2nd place was pretty good especially since he is now
tied for 1st in the points. He led 96 laps.
Carl Edwards led 61 laps and finished 3rd. Jeff
Burton finished 4th.
Dale Earnhardt, Jr. started 4th, his position in
the reset points because qualifying was rained out,
ran up front for 79 laps, changed tires and fell back
to 10th because of the tires, he said. Final finish
was 5th in the first race of the Chase.
Kurt Busch finished 6th, Martin Truex, Jr. finished
7th. Tony Stewart was penalized for speed on pit road
and was a lap down but recovered to finish 8th.
Denny Hamlin finished 9th, Kevin Harvick finished
10th and Jeff Gordon finished 14th.
Kyle Busch led 3 laps in the begining then had a
part failure in the left front which caused him to be
extremely loose. He let loose and spun, then was hit
by Jamie McMurray. He ended up 13 laps down and lost
7 positions in the points from being the leader.
Matt Kenseth took a hard hit on lap 228 when
cars bunched up on the restart, car #45 got loose, hit him,
then he got hit again in the driver's door by #38.
Nascar red flagged the race in order to clean it
all up. Matt finished 40th 72 laps down.

Jimmie Johnson dominates and leads 228 laps out of

Carl Edwards Gets 6th Win at the Sharpie 500
Starting from the pole, Carl Edwards was fast at
the end and bumped Kyle Busch out of the way on
lap 469 to pass and lead until the end. He led
84 laps altogehter.
Kyle Busch led from lap 55 to 469 for a total of
415 laps and was already loose when Edwards bumped
him out of the way. Kyle retaliated with a bump
and after the checkered flag intentionally hit
his car into the side of the #99 then Carl turned into
the side of the #18. Busch was called to the Nascar
trailer.
Jeff Gordon started 3rd, led 1 lap and
finished 5th.
Dale Earnhardt, Jr. started the race from 40th
position and on the start passed on the high side
before reaching the start/finish line. This is
ok on a restart but not at the start of the race
so he was penalized with a pass through putting
him a lap down for the entire race.
On lap 26 Jimmie Johnson gets a flat tire and
makes contact with Sterling Marlin. He goes to pit
road for repairs and comes back out 13 laps down.
It was downhill from there finishing 33rd and losing
a spot in the points.
On lap 216 Casey Mears heard "Clear, Clear" from
his spotter and moved up cutting off Michael Waltrip
starting a chain reaction crash that took out Kasey
Kahne, Sam Hornish, Jr., Clint Bower, and Reed Sorenson.
Kasey Kahne had a lot of damage and finished 40th
dropping 3 spots in the points to 14th.
New dates were announced for the 2009 schedule
including 9/6/09 for the Atlanta fall date.

Carl Edwards Gets 5th Win in 2008
Carl Edwards wins both Saturday and Sunday at
Michigan International Speedway. He pulls away
from Kyle Busch with 19 laps to go and keeps the
lead to the shootout at the end. He led 84 laps in
all. A great 29th Birthday weekend for Edwards.
On lap 90 Jimmie Johnson is 4 wide with
Tony Stewart and Jeff Gordon and gets a front
left cut tire from squeeze contact with Jeff Gordon
comes into pit lane and looses a lap.
Jeff Gordon takes another lap or 2 before his
tire goes down and he hits the wall hard. He gets
back on the track but ends up 42nd out of the race.
Lap 194 Denny Hamlin's engine blows up causing
the 7th caution. He's real disappointed with the
finish and is just 35 points in the top 12.
This is where Carl Edwards and Kyle Busch are
together on the restart with 2 laps to go. But
Carl pulls away for the finish.
Dale Earnhardt, Jr. was fast at the beginning
of the race where he led 43 laps but had a wreck
and finished 23rd loosing another position
in the points.
Four out of the top 5 were Roush cars:
#1 Carl Edwards, #3 David Ragan, #4 Greg Biffle
and #5 Matt Kenseth. Kyle Busch, JGR, was 2nd.
Mark Martin finished 6th. Brian Vickers who
started on the pole and led 21 laps, finished 7th.

Dale Earnhardt, Jr. Wins Lifelock 400 at Michigan
Gambling on gas strategy and staying out at the end going
through a caution with 3 laps to go and a green-white
checker Dale Jr. ended his 76 (points race) no-win streak.
Dale Jr. said with a huge smile on his face "They can
write what they want but we won one."
Dale Jr. won after racing for the lead with Jamie
McMurray in the last 6 laps, then a caution with 3 laps
to go and the green-white checker was set up. But the
#88 had very little fuel left and Dale Jr. was driving
on the flat, reving up then turning off the car, just
doing whatever he could to save gas. The green flag
was thrown then the white flag then a caution on the
last lap with Junior maintaining his speed to cross
the checkered line and win! He drove directly towards
the pit road but ran out of gas and his crew
gladly pushed him into the Winner's Circle.
Kasey Kahne came in 2nd, Matt Kenseth led 41 laps
and came in 3rd, Brian Vickers led 44 laps and came in
4th, while Tony Stewart led 1 lap and came in 5th.
Jimmie Johnson led 65 laps and came in 6th, Carl
Edwards led 21 laps and came in 7th, David Ragan led
1 lap and came in 8th, Elliott Sadler was 9th, and
Jamie McMurray led 1 lap coming in 10th.
Jeff Gordon was in the top 10 then had a too fast
exiting pit road penalty, went to the end of the lead
lap and came in 18th.
203 laps were run on this 2 mile track for the
Lifelock 400 at Michigan International Speedway.

problems at the end. Matt Kenseth had his best finish
of the year with 4th. Jeff Gordon struggled and was

Clint Bowyer Wins Saturday Night At Richmond
On the 3/4 mile track at Richmond, Dale Earnhardt, Jr.
came so close to winning on the track he last won
at 2 years ago but a fierce battle with Kyle Busch
for the lead led to a spin out with 2 laps to go.
Denny Hamlin led the race for a record breaking
381 laps. He had won Friday in the Nationwide series
and was the pole sitter for the Sprint Cup race but
his perfect night ended too soon with a soft then
flat tire before end of the race.
The fans stood and cheered when Dale Jr. took
with 8 laps to go, then Denny Hamlin who had
dropped back with a soft tire pulled to the side
of the track and caution was called. Dale Jr.'s
lead was shortened by the caution and Kyle Busch
made a run on the restart. They battled side by
side with the #88 a little ahead. Then the #18
got loose into Dale Jr. causing him to spin. The
fans stood and waved their fists at Kyle
for the spin out of their favorite driver.
Clint Bowyer who started 31st but had been
running 3rd took over the lead and after 8 caution
laps he kept the lead to the checkered flag.
Kyle Busch finished 2nd, Mark Martin was 3rd,
Tony Stewart was 4th and Martin Truex, Jr. 5th.
Dale Earnhardt, Jr. came back to finish 15th.

Kyle Busch Wins Wild Ride at Talladega
At the 2.66 mile Super Speedway Talladega
Kyle Busch came from behind, led 12 laps,
got pushes from Jeff Gordon and Juan Montoya
to win the Aarons 499 race.
In the last lap with the white flag, the
Big Wreck occured and Kyle Busch won under
the yellow flag.
This was Kyle Busch's 7th win this season.
He has 2 Sprint Cup wins with Joe Gibbs Racing,
2 wins in the Truck series, and 3 wins in
the Nationwide Series.
When 2 drivers teamed up and pushed
to the front they would gain a lot of
momentum to take the lead. Dale Earnhardt, Jr.
and Tony Stewart did it, Michael Waltrip and
Jimmie Johnson did it and Kyle Busch and
Jeff Gordon did it.
6-time winner at Talladega, Jeff Gordon's
strategy was to stay in second place until the
last lap and then come around to lead. But it
didn't quite work out that way and he dropped
back loosing momentum to finish 21st.
Juan Montoya, led 1 lap and pushed behind
Kyle Busch for a time to come in second. Denny
Hamlin led 38 laps and came in third. David Ragan
was 4th, Brian Vickers led 4 laps and finished 5th.
Travis Kvapil finished 6th, Casey Mears finished
7th, and Ryan Newman led 5 laps and finished 8th.
Clint Bowyer was 9th and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. finished
10th after leading 45 laps.
Jeff Burton was caught up in the last crash
but is still leading in the points.
Carl Edwards had issues with the Right Front
tire times 3. They didn't have the camber right.
Tony Stewart won for the first time at Talladega
in the Nationwide Series race on Saturday from the
pole. He almost won the pole for Sunday's race but
Joe Nemecheck was a half second faster. Tony led
the most laps in the Aaron's 499 but cut the right
front tire down and hit the wall loosing his
momentum. He finished 38th.

Jimmie Johnson Gas Strategy Wins Subway Fresh Fit 500
Jimmie Johnson ends the race the only car on the
lead lap because he did not pit and made it to
the win with gas to spare for doughnuts. Everyone
else green-flag pitted to get gas and ended one lap
down. What strategy by Chad Knaus! He had Jimmie
slow it down being in front by 10 or 20 seconds at
the end to conserve gas as he got closer to the
finish line.
Jimmie had a good car all night up front in
the beginning and then again at the front at the
end. He led 120 laps and this was the second win
at Phoenix the time before being November 2007.
With 70 laps to go, a good race segment was
Mark Martin in the #8 and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. in the
#88 racing each other, first one leading then the other.
Both looked to be winners but both pitted for gas
with about 10 laps to go. Mark Martin led 68 laps
and finished 5th. Dale Jr. led 87 laps and finished
7th moving up one position in the points.
Jeff Burton started 39th and had a good steady
run finishing 6th and retaining the points lead.
Ryan Newman started at the pole, his 43rd career
pole, but finished 43rd after leading 37 laps, because
the power steering blew up.
Jeff Gordon had a better night than last week
beacuse he finished 13th. Kevin Harvick finished
18th after running out of gas. Carl Edwards finished
4th after going a lap down and having a pit road penalty.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Wins the First Bud Shootout
In his first outing with Hendrick's Motor Sports, Dale Earnhardt, Jr.
wins the Bud Shootout and Hendrick's cars 24, 48 and 5 are right
behind him. Dale Jr. had a strong showing by leading most of
the 70 laps and holding off a strong second place Tony Stewart.
Jimmie Johnson gave Junior a few good pushes in following
him around the track and finished 3rd. Jeff Gordon also
co-operated well with his new teammate and finished 4th.
Reed Sorenson finished 5th and Casey Mears finished 6th.
The crowd cheered loudly and were on their feet when
Dale Jr. passed Tony Stewart with 3 laps to go to
regain the lead and win the race. Here's hoping this
is a good sign of the way Junior's season will go.
